Egyptian security forces claimed on Sunday that they foiled an attempt to smuggle 700 kilograms of explosives into the Gaza Strip through a tunnel.
Sources in the Egyptian security said that the forces, acting on intelligence, found 500 kilograms of explosives in nine packages in an abandoned house about 100 meters from the Gaza border. The same sources claimed that during a raid on the house, smugglers fled the scene.
In a separate raid, sources said, Egyptian forces raided a "weapons cache" near the border, seizing 200 kilograms of explosives.
The security forces also said they arrested a suspected smuggler, Jamal Ibrahim Abu Madi, 44, of Palestinian origin. Madi is considered one of the major smugglers involved in the Gaza-Egypt tunnel industry.
Egypt's security establishment is also continuing an investigation into three police officers who allegedly accepted bribes for smuggling goods through the tunnels.
