Palestinian militants fired mortar shells at IDF forces this morning near the security fence in the southern region of the Gaza strip, lightly injuring two IDF soldiers. The two have been evacuated to a hospital for medical treatment. IDF forces responded by firing at the source of the launches. The mortar shells landed in the same area where, just last night, IDF soldiers thwarted an attempted attack by an Islamic Jihad militant. The Jihad militant had planted an explosive device near the security fence. Terrorist organizations generally use the area near the fence as a location for planting explosives and executing planned attacks and kidnapping attempts. The IDF holds Hamas responsible for any terrorist activities in the Gaza Strip. Since last night, Monday night (Aug. 16) four rockets have been launched from the Gaza Strip and landed in Israel's southern communities. Over 115 rockets and mortars have been fired at Israel since the beginning of 2010, and over 400 rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip into Israel since the end of Operation Cast Lead.
