As of Wednesday (Oct. 6) 163 projectiles have been fired at Israel in the year 2010, a fact leading to estimations that this year will see the least rocket attacks targeting Israel. Until now the year with the least rocket attacks was 2005, when 479 projectiles were fired. The year with the most attacks was 2008, when 3,278 rockets were fired. Following this peak in rocket attacks, Operation Cast Lead was initiated on December 27, 2008 with the stated goals of stopping the bombardment of Israeli civilians by destroying Hamas' mortar and rocket launching capabilities, and of reducing the ability of Hamas and other terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip to perpetuate attacks against Israeli civilians in the future. In that regard, the Operation was a success, in that the following year of 2009 showed a steep decrease with 774 projectiles launched at Israel. A new report published for public viewing on the IDF Blog shows a detailed breakdown of rocket-fire from the Gaza Strip to Israel from 2002 till today. The report shows not only how many projectiles have been fired at Israel but also the range of these projectile, showing that 950,000 Israel civilians are currently under threat from Qassam rockets, grad rockets and mortars according to their city of residence. A map included in the IDF Blog report shows time required for civilians to find cover according to their respective locations, given the distance that the rockets travel. For example, from the time the siren of an incoming rocket is heard, some people have 15 seconds to take cover, others have 45 seconds.
