Islamic Jihad Militants Fire Rockets into S. Israel

Islamic Jihad movement on Tuesday claimed responsibility for firing three rockets into western Negev in southern Israel.

At 6:05 Tuesday morning (0305 GMT), the Islamic Jihad militants fired two rockets and a third after one hour into Sderot city, the movement's armed wing al-Quds Brigades said in a statement faxed to the press.

"The squads that carried out the two missions have returned back peacefully with the eyes of merciful Allah protecting them," the statement said.

Israeli army confirmed the attack and said two missiles landed in Sderot, causing no injuries or damage.

The al-Quds Brigades said the attacks "comes in the context of the responses to the Zionist aggressions against our people and to emphasize the choice of resistance until liberating Palestine."

The attack comes despite Egyptian efforts to broker a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip between Israel and Islamic Hamas movement which took over the territory a year ago.
