Jewish Policy Center Announces New Policy Director

Washington, DC – Jonathan Schanzer, a former terrorism finance analyst at the U.S. Treasury, has been named Director of Policy of the Jewish Policy Center. He will be responsible for exploring public policy issues that impact the American Jewish community.

“Jon possesses vast experience in the think tank world, augmented by his recent experience in the U.S. government,” said RJC Executive Director Matt Brooks. “We are thrilled to have someone with his skills and accomplishments.”

Mr. Schanzer recently left the U.S. Treasury after more than two years at the Office of Intelligence and Analysis. Prior to Treasury, Schanzer was a research fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, where he authored the book Al-Qaeda’s Armies: Middle East Affiliate Groups and the Next Generation of Terror (Specialty Press International, 2004). Mr. Schanzer also participated in a Washington Institute fact-finding trip in Iraq in 2004. Schanzer began his career in policy as a research fellow at the Middle East Forum, a Philadelphia-based think tank.

Mr. Schanzer holds a bachelors degree from Emory University and a masters degree in Middle Eastern Studies from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He studied Arabic at the American University in Cairo in 2001, and is currently a PhD candidate at Kings College London.

A native of Philadelphia, Mr. Schanzer has published widely in the national press, and has appeared with frequency on television channels ranging from Fox News and al-Jazeera. He has traveled widely in Israel, Iraq, Yemen, Egypt, Morocco, Kuwait, Qatar, Turkey, Jordan and the Palestinian Territories. He speaks Arabic and Hebrew.
