Israeli-Turkish Ties Still Strong Despite Iran’s Best Efforts… For Now

Turkey and Israel are discussing a multi-purpose pipeline to carry oil, natural gas, electricity, fiber optic cables, and water between the two nations. AFP ran the story a few days ago, but it got little attention as Turkey lashed out at Congress’ Armenian Genocide Resolution, and prepared to hammer PKK targets in Iraq. Indeed, Turkey remains a friend to Israel, despite recent strains.

The pipeline would stretch from Turkey’s Mediterranean port of Ceyhan to southern Israel. Experts from both Turkey and Israel will meet for a technical evaluation of the project.

Things may become complicated, however. Iran wants to dissuade Turkey from maintaining ties with Israel and NATO. To that end, Iran is providing assistance to Turkey against the PKK. Israel and the U.S. must ensure that Turkey remains an ally at all costs.
