CBS reports today that during Israel’s offensive against Hamas in January, the Israeli Air Force destroyed a Sudanese weapons convoy destined for the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip. Outgoing Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert did not deny this allegation, implying at a conference in Herzliya today that Israel will strike at terror wherever it exists.
As Jonathan Schanzer notes, since Islamists seized power by way of coup in 1989, Sudan has sheltered al-Qaeda, received training and funding from Iran, and provided training to Hamas, Hezbollah, and other terror groups. Khartoum’s ties with these groups prompted Washington to designate Sudan a state sponsor of terrorism in 1993.
Hamas recently threw its support behind Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir after he was indicted for genocide by the International Criminal Court (ICC). On March 4, the ICC issued al-Bashir a warrant for war crimes and crimes against humanity for his role in the genocide in Darfur.
