An official of the Hamas group that rules the Gaza Strip called on Monday for calm after a spike in cross-border violence between Palestinian militants and Israel. "It is necessary to restore calm and stop all types of aggression on our people," said Mohamed Awad, a minister in the Gaza-based Hamas government. Israel launched airstrikes against militant targets in Gaza last week and Palestinian gunmen fired rockets toward Israel communities near the border with Gaza, raising fears of further escalation. "We call on the international community, mainly countries that have ties with Israel, to intervene and stop the Israeli aggression, and we call on our people to unite and restore calm to block any large-scale aggression," Awad said. He said Hamas was in contact with Egypt and the United Nations to help restore calm. Israel launched a three-week military offensive in Gaza in December 2008 to try to stop daily rocket attacks from the enclave.
