In a letter of December 12, Doris Cadigan asked: "What kind of government would cut off food and fuel supplies to 1 million people because they dared exercise their right in a free and fair election to elect Hamas?" A better question is "What kind of government fires rockets into towns of its neighbor, and states that its aim is to destroy the country?"
What would America's response be if Mexico was bombarding El Paso with rockets from across the border every day? Would our government stand by and do nothing? I think not.
In June 2005, 8,000 Jewish residents of Gaza left their homes and properties and evacuated all of Gaza. Within 24 hours, Hamas forces moved into the vacated settlements firing rockets into civilian areas of Israel. The rocket fire began before Israel removed their soldiers and residents from Gaza, and has never stopped. A cease fire was arranged five months ago between Israel and Hamas, during which time, the rockets barrage decreased to only (!) 4 or 5 every day.
Last month, Israel found Hamas digging a tunnel under the border fence to enable it to kidnap more Israeli soldiers like the one they have held imprisoned and incommunicado for over two years.
Israel sent a squad of soldiers into Gaza to destroy the tunnel. In a battle there, four Palestinian armed men were killed. In an effort to stop the rocket barrage that followed, Israel stopped shipments onto Gaza.
Israel says - the solution is simple - stop the rocket fire, and the blockade would be eased. The blockade - a disgrace? Far from it - a notice from Israel that it will not countenance the continuing rocket attacks on its civilian population.
The Hamas Solution - continue the rocket fire, and let its people suffer from lack of shipments.
The rockets have never stopped firing from Gaza.
