An Israeli was killed Saturday when a rocket fired from the Gaza Strip hit a house in southern Israel, said local rescue service.
Three others sustained light to serious wounds in the cross-border attack at the southern town of Netivot and were rushed to a local hospital for treatment, local news service Ynet quoted the Magen David Adom as saying.
The casualties on the Israeli side came shortly after the Jewish state carried out simultaneous air strikes at tens of targets in the Hamas-ruled enclave, killing at least 140 people, in an operation in response to the continuing artillery attacks at southern Israel.
Adding to some 200 rockets and mortar shells fired during the past week, over 20 rockets landed in Israel by mid-afternoon Saturday. Besides the Netivot incident, the barrage caused no injury, but inflicted damage to local properties.
Israel and Gazan militant groups had generally observed an Egypt-brokered truce deal for five months before clashes resumed in early November.
As Gazan militants pummeled southern Israel on a nearly daily basis, Israeli officials have warned recently that they would take decisive moves to restore security in the south.
Amid worries that Gazan militants would carry out a massive rocket barrage in retaliation following Saturday's raids, Israeli authorities have put communities near the Gaza border on alert and urged local residents to avoid gathering in public sites and stay in shelter rooms.
