I am writing in response to the Dec. 30 letter from David Keppel as well as other comments quoted in The Star on the same date. Israel has shown great restraint in her response to Hamas' relentless violations of international law. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert even went on Palestinian TV to appeal to Hamas to stop the rocket attacks or Israel would have to respond forcefully, risking Palestinian casualties. Hamas appears to care nothing about its own people, so, the attacks continued, leading to the current actions. Israel has an obligation to the people living within her borders to defend them; that includes Arabs as well, who are also at risk. It is appropriate for the United States, as well as all governments, to deal with Hamas, Hezbollah, al-Qaida and all these criminal enemies of peace and justice.
