Israeli and American representatives to the UN on Wednesday told a regular session of the Security Council regarding crises in the Middle East that progress in the peace process is not really possible while Gaza terrorists continue to fire rockets into southern Israel.
Israel's incoming government will not accept a return to the situation of last year, when thousands of rockets hit Israel, but Hamas pretended to be party to a ceasefire so that Israel would continue making concessions to the Palestinians, Israeli ambassador Gabriela Shalev told the council.
Alejandro Wolff, the US deputy representative at the UN, warned that if terrorist forces in Gaza are not reined in, "another deadly round of violence" is likely just around the corner.
UN Undersecretary for Political Affairs Lynn Pascoe tried to blunt the Israeli and US concerns by equating the ongoing rocket fire to Israel's Gaza embargo, which was originally put in place because of the rocket fire.
