Palestinian terrorists in Gaza fired three Kassam rockets at southern Israel on Tuesday afternoon. Two of the rockets hit an open area in the Sdot Negev region and another landed outside Sderot. There were no reports of casualties or damage.
Earlier Tuesday, the IDF killed two Palestinian gunmen and wounded three others along the Gaza-Israel border, in one of the worst flare-ups since the end of Operation Cast Lead more than two months ago.
An IDF soldier was lightly wounded in the fighting, the army said.
According to the IDF, soldiers spotted four gunmen planting explosive devices along the border fence, crossed into Gaza and exchanged fire with them. The soldier was wounded in the ensuing gun battle. The troops called in an air strike that successfully targeted the armed men, the army said, and later discovered weapons in the vicinity that included grenades and an anti-tank missile.
The wounded soldier was taken to Soroka Hospital in Beersheba for treatment.
Palestinian medical crews had evacuated the bodies of two Palestinian men in military uniforms from the border, according to Dr. Moaiya Hassanain of Gaza's Health Ministry.
Three other gunmen were wounded, Hassanain said, two in the initial clash and a third in a subsequent IAF missile strike.
Palestinian witnesses reported hearing two explosions from the border area in the central Gaza Strip, after which IDF helicopters hovered over the fence and fired at targets inside Gaza.
No Palestinian group immediately claimed the dead and wounded gunmen as its members, but Hamas sent a text message to reporters saying the group's fighters had fired 18 mortar shells at the IDF troops.
