The Color Red alert system was activated in the southern town of Sderot on Sunday morning, while the city's police officers were busy trying to prevent right-wing activists from marching towards the former settlement bloc of Gush Katif. The siren also sounded in Kibbutz Beit Kama and in the communities of Lehavim and Rahat in the Negev. The Israel Defense Forces Spokesperson's Unit said the alert was a false alarm. The alert system was activated at around 10:30 am in Sderot and other southern communities, sending many residents to take shelter after many days of calm. Yehuda Morag, a resident of Gvaot Bar near Lehavim, told Ynet, "We did not hear a rocket land. We just went into the house. We assume it was a false alarm." The last time a rocket hit Sderot was two weeks ago. A woman and a teenage girl were lightly injured while attempting to take cover. That day's rocket fire was preceded by an exchange of fire between Israel Defense Forces soldiers and Palestinian gunmen near the Kissufim crossing. According to the army, Golani troops spotted a cell of at least four gunmen who were apparently planning to plant an explosive device in the area. The ground force alerted a chopper, which shot and killed two of the cell members. An IDF soldier was lightly injured in the exchange of fire.
