Yesterday, the Iranian government ordered the country’s nuclear agency to begin building uranium enrichment plants at five new sites, and to locate another five sites for construction over the next two months. Moreover, according to a senior Iranian lawmaker on Saturday, Iran may withdraw from the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, making Tehran’s nuclear program free from UN oversight.

Iran’s announcement to build ten nuclear sites comes just two days after the IAEA voted to censure the Islamic Republic, demanding that Tehran immediately shut down its newly revealed nuclear facility near Qom.

According to Jonathan Schanzer, although Iran’s financial leverage took a hit in November, there is “no substitute for imposing crippling sanctions” on Tehran. As he concludes, while Congress and America’s allies are ready to impose such sanctions, the White House continues to delay.
