Reader comment on: How To Destroy OPEC

Flex fuel vehicles are only a start. Fischer-Troph was invented in the early 1920s to convert coal to liquid fuel. It turns out that the process can be modified to do things such as converting trash and natural gas to liquid fuel. The trash can be anything from corn cobs and switch grass to the stuff found in trash bins. Congress needs to do two things to enable the progress in this area. First, remove the obstructions. When the Bush Administration revoked the Executive Order against off-shore drilling, crude prices dropped. Now, it is Congress' turn. The second thing involves the fledgling synthetic fuel industry: It was tried in the late 70s and early 80s, but OPEC tanked the crude prices long enough for about $1 Billion in investments to be lost. So, Congress needs to step up and provide a price support or purchase guarantees for the military services so OPEC can't do the "Lucy and the Football" trick again.
