Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan came within a whisper of reelection on May 14. The runoff against rival Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu is on Sunday. With Turkey’s economy in shambles even before a powerful earthquake in February, and wedged between NATO obligations and an increasing military relationship with Russia, many in the West wrote Erdogan off. It didn’t happen; and Erdogan’s AKP retains its plurality in the Parliament, albeit with fewer seats.
