The ouster of the Assad regime in Syria, along with its Iranian protectors, replaced a Shiite radical government with a Sunni radical government. It also enhanced the position of Turkey, a strong supporter of Sunni Islamist expansion. The early months of Ahmed al-Sharaa’s HTS government have been marked by violence – particularly aimed at the Alawite and Druze communities. During those months, however, Syria and Israel have conducted direct, high-level conversations about future stability and security.
Join us as Professor Mark Meirowitz of SUNY Maritime College walks us through the present and considers the potential for the future.
