The Gaza Underground

The Guardian ran a piece today about how Gazans are digging tunnels under Egypt’s border to smuggle weapons, cigarettes, people, and more.

This is nothing new. I covered this issue recently in the Philadelphia Bulletin and less recently in National Review Online.

What’s new is that a group of smugglers gave an AP photographer rare access to watch them dig. Here’s a bit: “In underground darkness with stifling heat and limited air supply, the diggers painstakingly removed sand and rubble as they crawled through cramped spaces carrying portable lamps and homemade tools.”

The tunnels are one danger among many as Gaza undergoes its process of Talibanization.
