Sarko Gets Syrious

France “will have no more contact with Syria… until we have proof of Syrian willingness to let Lebanon appoint a president by consensus,” said French President Nicolas Sarkozy, AFP reports.

Sarko has ruffled some Arab feathers by showing friendship for Israel and condemning terrorist regimes like Syria, which is more like a mafia family than a government. However, he still may have his work cut out for him.

As Soner Cagaptay argues in the new inFocus Quarterly, which examines the Islamist threat in Europe, Sarko’s Turkey policy may need some fine tuning. Olivier Guitta also explains how there are Islamist businesses operating throughout France that require government scrutiny.

Still, Sarkozy should be lauded for taking his country’s foreign policy in the right direction.
