Pakistan Snubs FBI

A blast rocked Islamabad yesterday just after Pakistan’s new President Asif Ali Zardari spoke about fighting terror. The attack at a Marriot hotel killed more than 60 and injured 200. See the video here.

The FBI has offered assistance but Pakistan rejected the help. Interior Ministry adviser Reham Malik told reporters, “We do not need help. We are competent. We reject it.”

In the latest issue of inFOCUS, analyst Daveed Gartenstein-Ross argues that the U.S. must strike a delicate balance of engagement with Pakistan to weaken al- Qaeda and the Taliban while not making Zardari appear like a puppet. This must be accomplished by working with Pakistani intelligence behind the scenes. However, the rejection of FBI assistance may be a set-back.
