Ahmadinejad vs the West

At the UN on Tuesday, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad reiterated his claim that the US, the West, and Israel will be destroyed. He also indicated that Iran’s uranium enrichment program would continue. For more of his UN address, click here.

In the summer 2007 inFOCUS journal, Lawrence Haas observed that, “Chaos is central to Ahmadinejad’s religious beliefs and, by extension, his hopes for the future. He believes… that the Twelfth Imam, or ‘Mahdi,’ a messianic figure from the ninth century, will soon reappear to signal… the onset of Islamic justice over all the earth.”

Iran does not fear a US response, Jonathan Schanzer observed in 2007. Washington, now spread thin in Iraq and Afghanistan, has issued empty threats for decades. Economic concerns at home and the threat of a new Cold War with Russia currently divert US attention.

Accordingly, Ahmadinejad can be expected to continue to pursue his genocidal apocalyptic vision.
